UK heatwave highlights refrigeration resilience and growing air‑conditioning divide

A recent heatwave in the United Kingdom exposed weaknesses in the country’s cooling infrastructure. Industry leaders noted that many refrigeration systems were designed for lower summer temperatures and struggled to maintain capacity when demand peaked, prompting calls for designs that prioritize resilience as well as efficiency. Data from Star Refrigeration showed that integrated controls and preventative maintenance helped some plants sustain cooling even at ambient temperatures up to +40 °C.

Research based on the English Housing Survey revealed that only about 4.3 % of UK households have air‑conditioning, and its adoption is uneven. Ownership is highest in London and the south‑east and among higher‑income households, while northern regions, low‑income families, renters and vulnerable groups such as the elderly are much less likely to have access. This emerging “cooling divide” raises concerns about a new form of summer fuel poverty, as air‑conditioning can increase electricity bills at a time when many already face high energy costs.

Both findings underscore the need for policy and industry responses that address the reliability of commercial refrigeration and the equitable provision of household cooling as climate‑driven heatwaves become more frequent.
