UK braces for record-breaking 41 °C heatwave as July temperatures set to soar

The Met Office has warned that the United Kingdom will experience another heatwave in early July, with high‑pressure systems expected to bring hot, dry conditions across England and Wales. Forecasts from July 3‑12 predict temperatures climbing above 30 °C, and model data from the GFS and WXCharts indicate that parts of western England, the Midlands and the North could reach 40 °C to 41 °C, potentially setting a new national heat record that currently stands at 40.3 °C (July 2022).

June last week already broke temperature records three days in a row, peaking at 37.3 °C in Suffolk. The impending heat is expected to strain health services, with the London Ambulance Service reporting a surge in heat‑related calls during the previous spell, and hospitals in several regions declaring critical incidents. Transportation networks are also vulnerable: rail operators have imposed speed restrictions, and road authorities in Scotland have deployed gritting vehicles to prevent tarmac melt. Health officials have issued warnings about the effects of extreme heat on medications such as insulin and inhalers, and have urged the public to stay hydrated and check medication storage.

The heatwave could affect up to 18 counties, including Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Lancashire and others, with the southeast of England likely to see prolonged periods above the 28 °C heat‑wave threshold. Emergency services, schools and utilities are preparing for the expected impact as the UK moves toward what could become the hottest day ever recorded on the British Isles.
