UK heatwave spikes demand for fans, cooling gear and outdoor goods
Retail data shows that Britain’s recent heatwave has dramatically reshaped consumer spending. Debenhams reported a 232% year‑on‑year increase in sales of fans and air‑conditioning products between 19 June and 20 July, with portable neck fans and tower fans leading the surge. Searches for “air con” rose 4,442% and “fan” 1,165% over the same period. Outdoor‑living items also saw strong growth: picnicware sales jumped 240%, swimming pools 133%, barbecues 44% and garden furniture 24%.
Point‑of‑sale provider Epos Now analysed Google Trends data for the same heatwave (11 June–10 July 2026) and identified breakout search growth of over 5,000% for a range of cooling products, hydration accessories, UV‑protective clothing and pet‑cooling items. Notable spikes included battery‑powered fans, split‑air conditioners, cooling mats, insulated water bottles, BBQ marinades, cooling towels and dog cooling vests. The research highlights how prolonged high temperatures are driving UK shoppers toward both immediate cooling solutions and products that support outdoor leisure.
These trends underline the significant influence of weather on retail demand, prompting retailers to adjust inventory and marketing strategies to meet heightened consumer interest in cooling and outdoor‑entertainment categories.
