UK heatwaves drive travel shifts and impact retail sales
Record-breaking heat in the United Kingdom is driving shifts in both travel preferences and retail performance. A growing trend known as ‘coolcations’ has seen British tourists seeking colder destinations to escape rising summer temperatures. Airlines like Wizz Air report increased demand for flights to Eastern European cities, including Tallinn, Vilnius, Kaunas, Gdansk, and Poznan, while Switzerland remains a top destination for those seeking cooler climates.
In the retail sector, the extreme weather has had a mixed impact. While overall retail revenues rose 1.1 per cent in the three months leading to July 2026, sales dipped by 0.5 per cent during July, the hottest and driest month on record for the UK. High temperatures have deterred high street footfall, which slumped 2.1 per cent year-over-year in July. While department and clothing stores saw declines, supermarkets and beverage retailers benefited from increased spending on seasonal items like drinks and outdoor supplies.
