UK heatwaves prompt calls to restructure school calendar

Rising temperatures and frequent heatwaves in the United Kingdom are prompting calls to reconsider the academic calendar. During recent extreme heat, more than 1,000 schools across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland were forced to close or send students home early due to stifling classroom conditions caused by a lack of air conditioning and ventilation.

Experts and officials have raised concerns regarding the impact of heat on student welfare and academic success. Baroness Brown, chair of the UK’s Climate Change Adaptation committee, noted that high temperatures can “significantly impair concentration and performance” in children. Additionally, Ofsted’s chief inspector, Sir Martyn Oliver, previously suggested that the timing of school holidays should be reviewed, noting that peak heat often coincides with critical exam periods in May, June, and July.

While Scotland follows a summer break pattern similar to much of Europe, the current scheduling in England and Wales has left students in classrooms during the hottest periods of the early summer.
