To help residents keep their homes comfortable without relying heavily on air‑conditioning, design experts point to centuries‑old Mediterranean principles.

Mediterranean interiors stay cool through the use of natural, breathable materials such as stone, hand‑finished plaster, terracotta, timber and handmade ceramics. Light colour palettes – warm whites, sand tones, olive greens, ochres and muted blues – reflect sunlight and reduce heat absorption. Layouts that maximise natural light, promote ventilation and incorporate lighter textiles also contribute to a calmer, cooler indoor environment.

British homes, traditionally built for winter warmth with heavier fabrics and enclosed spaces, are being encouraged to adopt these strategies: replace thick curtains with airy linens, introduce lighter flooring and furnishings, and bring in plants and outdoor elements.
