UK Home Office revokes refugee status for Syrian surgeon
The UK Home Office has revoked the refugee status of a Syrian plastic surgeon, declaring that Syria is now a safe country for him and his family to return to. This decision, which follows the fall of the Assad regime, is believed to be the first of its kind in Europe regarding the active removal of refugee protection for a specific nationality.
The surgeon, who fled Syria in 2016 and is currently living in London with his wife and six children, expressed shock at the decision. While the Foreign Office advises against travel to Syria due to a “volatile” security situation, the Home Office has classified the country as safe for repatriation.
The surgeon, who is registered with the General Medical Council, noted that he was previously targeted by radical groups still operating in Syria. This move is expected to impact thousands of other Syrian refugees settled in the United Kingdom.
