UK Home Secretary to hold migration and law enforcement talks with EU

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is set to meet with EU Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner to discuss migration, border management, law enforcement cooperation, and counter-terrorism. The discussions include potential arrangements for the UK to rejoin European security and migration databases, such as Eurodac, which it has been locked out of since Brexit.

Internal friction has emerged within the UK government regarding proposed changes to immigration rules. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh has criticized Mahmood’s plan to extend the residency requirement for permanent settlement from five years to 15 years. Fahnbulleh argued that such measures threaten the process of building social cohesion and integration, suggesting the government should focus on a system based on both control and compassion.

The meeting follows recent statements from leadership regarding the UK’s long-term relationship with the EU and efforts to restore data-sharing capabilities on immigration. Recent Frontex data indicates a 43% decline in small boat crossings in the English Channel.
