Interior‑design expert Melissa Denham recommends using inexpensive (£1) hanging dehumidifier bags, regular ventilation and a household dehumidifier to keep wardrobe humidity low. She advises cleaning wardrobes thoroughly, wiping surfaces with a mild detergent or vinegar solution, and ensuring clothes are dry before storage.

Mould experts Robin Murphy and Alex Hughes stress that hidden mould often causes persistent musty odours in British homes. They note that indoor humidity above 65 % encourages mould growth and list seven common hidden hotspots: washing‑machine detergent drawer, bathroom extractor fan, walls behind headboards and wardrobes, carpets, sink overflow holes, cupboard backs, and damp textiles in laundry baskets. Cleaning tips include using diluted chlorine bleach on walls, vinegar‑water mixtures on carpets and textiles, and avoiding the combination of bleach and vinegar. Daily airing, running extractors after showers, and fixing leaks are recommended to prevent recurrence.
