UK hospitality sector demands VAT cuts to prevent business closures

Hospitality leaders in the United Kingdom are calling for significant tax relief to prevent widespread business closures. A survey by the BII reveals that 75% of pub owners would invest in their businesses if tax burdens were reduced. The industry is facing severe financial pressure, with only one in four pubs reporting profits between January and August. Operators cite rising staff costs, energy prices, and an inability to pass costs to consumers as primary drivers of this instability.

More than 800 industry leaders, including major names such as Greene King, JD Wetherspoon, and Marriott, have petitioned the government to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 20% to 10%. They argue this would align the UK with European neighbors like Spain, France, and Italy. The group warns that without these measures, job losses will accelerate and the structural decline of the sector—marked by a 30% drop in per capita beer consumption—will worsen.
