UK hospitality sector shows diverging consumer spending patterns

The UK hospitality sector is experiencing a divergence in consumer spending patterns. According to the Moore Kingston Smith hospitality index, July saw strong performance in casual dining, hotels, and fine dining, driven largely by tourism, family outings, and experience-led occasions.

In contrast, pubs and bars experienced unexpected sales declines despite favorable summer weather. This suggests that while consumers are still spending, they are becoming increasingly selective, prioritizing destination dining and tourism over routine discretionary spending. Factors such as rising employment costs, National Insurance increases, and business rate pressures continue to impact operators.

As the summer season transitions into autumn, businesses are advised to prepare for shifting footfall patterns. Retail and hospitality traders are expected to see a move from seasonal outdoor spending toward back-to-school and autumn essentials, necessitating stable payment systems and reliable point-of-sale infrastructure to maintain customer confidence during changing trading routines.
