UK housing: Bellway marks 80 years as family wealth aids homeownership
Bellway is celebrating its 80th anniversary, marking its evolution from a family business to one of the United Kingdom’s largest housebuilders. To coincide with the milestone, the company has unveiled a refreshed brand identity. The firm is also engaging homeowners in the North East to share memories of their properties to document the evolution of home design.
In a separate development regarding the UK property market, research from The Private Office (TPO) indicates that family financial support is becoming a critical factor in homeownership. A survey of over 2,100 UK adults found that 97% believe it is difficult for young people to purchase homes without family assistance, with 80% stating homeownership is increasingly dependent on family wealth.
The study highlights a shift in attitudes toward wealth transfer, as 81% of respondents believe parents or grandparents should provide financial support during their lifetime rather than through inheritance. While 71% of those surveyed believe support should be given early to maximize impact, HMRC data suggests that a significant portion of lifetime gifting still occurs later in life, often from estates of individuals aged 85 and older.
