UK housing costs: High expenses for upsizing and parental rent

New research highlights the significant financial hurdles facing homeowners and young adults in the UK housing market. According to Yopa, the average homeowner in England faces approximately £15,513 in costs when upsizing their property. This figure includes an average of £4,902 for selling costs and £10,610 for buying costs, with Stamp Duty representing the largest single expense at an average of £8,615. Costs are notably higher in London, where moving expenses can reach £47,704.

In a separate study commissioned by Nationwide Building Society, data shows that parents in London charge their children the highest monthly rent in the country, averaging £414.97. This is significantly higher than the £187.08 charged by parents in Yorkshire and the Humber. Despite these costs, the survey found that many parents use rent as a tool to assist their children; over half of parents reported returning some or all of the rent to help their children save for homeownership deposits.
