UK housing developments approved despite local opposition

A plan to demolish the historic Penwortham Priory Gatehouse in Lancashire was withdrawn after more than 250 objections and public outcry. The proposal, submitted by Gibraltar‑based planning agent Glencairn Ltd on behalf of the executors of Anne Whitworth, would have cleared the last remaining part of the priory to make way for new houses. Historic England is now considering listing the gatehouse, which would give it legal protection.

In a separate case, South Staffordshire District Council approved a scheme for 90 new homes on West Midlands Green Belt land near Wolverhampton, despite over 70 objections from residents, local councillors and MP Mike Wood. The development by Bloor Homes includes 50% affordable housing, 10% bungalows, extensive green infrastructure and financial contributions to local sports, recreation and transport improvements.
