UK housing developments see mixed planning outcomes in Wokingham and Malmesbury
In Wokingham, the Borough Council has approved plans for 215 new homes on land east of Wood's Farm, off Easthampstead Road. Proposed by Miller Homes, the development includes a mix of houses and apartments, with 75 units designated as affordable housing through social rent, affordable rent, or shared ownership.
The project is part of the broader South Wokingham development, which aims to deliver up to 1,434 homes, a primary school, new roads, and public open spaces. The site is located near the new South Wokingham Distributor Road, intended to improve local transport links.
Conversely, in Malmesbury, Wiltshire Council's Northern Area Planning Committee rejected a proposal by Gleeson Land to build 149 homes on land near Whychurch Farm and Crudwell Road. Despite planning officers' recommendations, councillors sided with objections from Malmesbury Town Council and local parish councils.
Objections centered on the potential detrimental impact on community amenities, including increased traffic congestion, pressure on education and medical services, and the loss of open space. The decision followed concerns regarding the development's proximity to the Grade I listed Malmesbury Abbey.
