UK ice‑cream prices climb as traditional vans disappear

The classic British ice‑cream van, once a summer staple, has largely vanished – the number of operators has fallen from around 20,000 in the 1950s to fewer than a quarter of that today. At the same time, premium gelato outlets such as Amorino, Marcelo’s and the Dreamery charge between £4 and £8 per scoop, turning a simple treat into a boutique luxury.

A poll of 2,000 UK parents commissioned by Aldi shows that the average price of an ice‑cream cone is now £2.65. Children are expected to eat three cones a week over a six‑week summer break, bringing the total cost per child to roughly £48. Leeds records the highest price at £2.86 per cone, with 18 % of parents there paying at least £4 each time. Concern over the expense is prompting families to skip treats for themselves or tell children the van has run out of ice cream. Aldi responded with a free‑ice‑cream van in London, highlighting the growing pressure on household budgets during the holidays.
