UK implements 24-week target for asylum appeals to speed deportations
The UK government has implemented a new 24-week statutory target for determining specific asylum and immigration appeals. This measure, established under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act 2025, aims to accelerate the removal of individuals with no legal right to remain in the country.
The new timeframe specifically applies to appeals from individuals receiving asylum support and accommodation, as well as certain non-detained foreign national offenders. By speeding up the judicial process, the Home Office intends to reduce the backlog of over 150,000 pending appeals and decrease reliance on taxpayer-funded accommodation, with estimated savings of approximately 6.9 billion pounds.
Previously, the average time for a case to be decided by the First-tier Tribunal ranged between 61 and 67 weeks. The reform is part of a broader effort to address delays in the immigration system that have historically contributed to prolonged stays in government-funded housing.
