UK independent brewery closure rate slows in 2026

The rate of brewery closures in the United Kingdom has slowed during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. According to the SIBA UK Brewery Tracker, net closures averaged fewer than one brewery per week between January and June 2026, a significant decrease from the nearly three closures per week seen in 2025.

Total net brewery closures for the first six months of 2026 stood at -16, compared to a total loss of -137 breweries throughout 2025. While these figures suggest a potential stabilization following several difficult years marked by rising costs and pandemic-related debt, industry leaders warn that significant challenges remain.

Andy Slee, Chief Executive of the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA), noted that while demand for independent beer remains strong, profitability is threatened by high production costs, taxation, and limited market access. SIBA reported that brewers are often unable to access approximately 62% of pubs in their local markets due to the dominance of major brands. The organization is calling on the government to increase Draught Relief and prioritize a market access review to support small independent producers.
