UK infrastructure projects focus on pedestrian and bus stop safety
Infrastructure projects are underway or concluding in different regions of the United Kingdom to improve pedestrian safety and road accessibility.
On the Isle of Wight, Island Roads has completed upgrades to two bus stops on the A3056 at Hale Common. The project, funded by the Isle of Wight Council through the Department for Transport’s A3056 Safer Roads Fund, involved creating hard standings, a footway, and a tactile crossing point to assist pedestrians moving between stops. Temporary traffic lights used during the works have been removed.
In York, the City of York Council is scheduled to begin refurbishing the pedestrian crossing on Heworth Green near Dodsworth Avenue and Mill Lane starting October 5, 2026. As part of the Traffic Signal Asset Renewal (TSAR) programme, the project will replace traffic signals with Puffin crossing equipment, widen the central island, and resurface pavements. The works are expected to last approximately four weeks, utilizing temporary traffic lights and causing some local restrictions, including the closure of Mill Lane onto Heworth Green.
