UK inheritance tax receipts reach record £936m in September

UK inheritance tax (IHT) receipts reached a record monthly high of £936m in September 2026, according to HMRC figures. This represents an increase of £265m compared to the £671m collected in September 2025 and surpasses the previous monthly record of £871m set in June 2026.

For the first six months of the 2026/27 financial year, total receipts reached £4.72bn, a 7% increase from the £4.39bn collected during the same period last year. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has forecast that total IHT receipts will reach £9.5bn by the end of the 2026/27 financial year, up from £8.5bn in the previous year.

Experts attribute the rising collections to frozen tax thresholds and increasing asset values, particularly in property. The nil-rate band has remained at £325,000 since 2009. Additionally, upcoming changes are expected to expand the tax net, including reforms to Business Property Relief and the inclusion of unused pension pots within the scope of IHT starting in April 2027.
