UK interior designers highlight snug room revival and bedroom wardrobe trends

Interior designers say the traditional “snug” – a small, warm retreat originally from 19th‑century pubs – is experiencing a renaissance in UK homes as owners seek intimate spaces beyond open‑plan living. Gabriele Pittau, chief design officer at Poltronesofà, notes that the snug offers “comfort, privacy and a place to properly switch off,” while creative director Verity Coleman adds that more homeowners are carving out dedicated nooks for relaxation.

At the same time, designers warn that wall‑to‑wall sliding mirrored wardrobe doors, popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, are beginning to look dated. Emma Deterding of Kelling Designs recommends alternatives such as antique‑style mirrors, bronze or smoked glass, fluted glass doors, or floor‑to‑ceiling wardrobes painted to blend with walls, which can maintain a sense of openness without the “soulless” effect of an all‑mirror façade.
