UK introduces new visa rules to protect modern slavery victims
New UK immigration rules have been introduced to protect victims of modern slavery holding Skilled Worker visas. Under the updated regulations, individuals formally recognized as victims by the Home Office are no longer tied to a specific sponsor. This allows them to leave abusive employers and seek lawful employment with any employer for the remainder of their visa term without risking their immigration status.
Previously, Skilled Worker visa holders who left an abusive sponsor faced the risk of losing both their income and their right to remain in the country. The changes aim to prevent destitution and exploitation, particularly in sectors such as care work where rogue employers have been known to demand illegal payments or provide insufficient work. Minister for Migration and Citizenship Jo White stated that the changes are intended to give victims the freedom to leave abusive workplaces and rebuild their lives.
