RAF Fairford security incident leads to arrest of dual UK-Iranian national FAST-MOVING

British counter-terrorism police have arrested a 27-year-old man with dual UK and Iranian citizenship in Westminster, London, as part of an investigation into a security incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The arrest was made on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under the Terrorism Act 2006. A 26-year-old British national was also questioned under caution, and searches were conducted at two properties in London.

The investigation follows an incident on Sunday near the RAF Fairford airbase, a strategic site used by US military aircraft. Initially, five British men in their 20s were detained near the base on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses; they have since been released on police bail. While forensic examinations of vehicles at the scene found no improvised explosive devices, investigators recovered a quantity of gasoline.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated there are “strong indications” that Iran played a role in the incident. However, the Iranian government and its foreign ministry have strongly denied any involvement, calling the allegations unfounded. Counter-terrorism officials, including senior coordinator Vicki Evans, noted the investigation is highly complex and is exploring all possibilities, including potential involvement by a foreign state.
