UK ISA reforms and savings account comparisons
Recent discussions regarding changes to Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) in the UK have raised concerns among savers. While there are no plans to abolish ISAs or remove the tax-free status of existing savings, significant rule changes are expected.
Under proposed reforms, under-65s will face a lower annual contribution limit for Cash ISAs starting in April 2027. Lifetime ISAs are slated for replacement for new applicants once a successor product is launched, though current holders will be permitted to keep their existing accounts. Junior ISAs are not expected to be abolished.
When choosing between a Cash ISA and a standard savings account, the primary advantage of an ISA is its tax-free status. Interest earned in a standard account may be subject to tax once it exceeds the Personal Savings Allowance, which can significantly reduce the benefits of compound interest over long periods. However, standard accounts may remain competitive for savers who stay within their tax-free allowances or have already reached their annual ISA contribution limits.
