UK Labour leader Andy Burnham vows relentless response to Channel migrant crossings

Labour leader Andy Burnham said the United Kingdom will adopt an "implacable" stance on small‑boat crossings of the English Channel, stressing that recent enforcement actions have cut crossings by about 43% year‑to‑date. He highlighted doubled anti‑people‑smuggling efforts by the National Crime Agency and French authorities, and called for regular dialogue with the EU on broader Schengen‑related issues.

At the same time, Spain has swiftly expelled the majority of migrants who entered its North‑African enclave of Ceuta, using a 2015 law that allows rapid returns without asylum procedures. Reform UK, led by Zia Yusuf, announced a proposal called "Operation Fortress" to use the Royal Navy to intercept Channel boats, claiming the plan would comply with international law. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood noted that the UK lacks a legal basis, such as the Dublin Regulation, to return migrants to mainland Europe, limiting its ability to mirror Spain’s approach.
