UK Labour pushes for National Electoral Reform Commission

Nearly two hundred MPs have signed a parliamentary amendment calling for a National Commission on Electoral Reform to review the United Kingdom's voting system and consider proportional representation. The proposal, backed by Labour MP Alex Sobel, seeks an independent, transparent process that would bring together experts and the public to build consensus on future voting arrangements.

A poll of Labour Party members commissioned by LabourList found that 64 % support the amendment, with only 16 % opposed. Labour leader Andy Burnham and a majority of Labour MPs have expressed backing for the commission, while Dame Joan Ruddock has launched a parliamentary petition in favour of the review. The commission would aim to create a fair, inclusive and evidence‑based reform process, drawing on examples such as New Zealand’s Royal Commission and British Columbia’s citizens’ assembly.
