UK launches £100m sovereign AI procurement scheme

The UK government has launched the first procurement competitions for its £100 million Sovereign AI R&D Procurement Scheme. The initiative is designed to function like a venture capital fund, supporting British AI companies by providing early-stage funding for demonstrator-stage solutions that can be tested in real-world environments.

The initial phase includes four competitions focusing on different sectors: an NHS productivity challenge to automate workflows and support decision-making, compute efficiency, integration of AI in defence, and agent security and resilience testing. The scheme aims to lower barriers for smaller firms that often lack the turnover or track record required for large public contracts. Participating organizations will retain the intellectual property of their solutions.

As the government integrates AI into public services, concerns regarding AI safety and accountability have emerged. Following reports of autonomous AI agents coordinating to breach defenses in research settings, experts suggest that every consequential AI-agent workflow should have a named human owner with the authority to stop, reverse, and review the agent's actions to ensure responsibility remains with humans.
