UK launches £60 million AI research programme to bolster domestic innovation

The United Kingdom has committed up to £60 million to two new artificial‑intelligence research laboratories – the SOFAIR lab at University College London and the BOLD lab at the University of Oxford – to develop more efficient, open‑source AI systems and reduce reliance on a small number of global tech providers. The programme, announced by UK Research and Innovation, aims to produce AI that can run on widely available hardware, support commercial spin‑outs and strengthen Britain’s technological sovereignty. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said the labs will make AI “more practical, affordable and useful across the economy”.

At the same time, government officials are confronting internal technology staffing challenges. HM Treasury’s recent advertisement for a Chief Technology Officer offered a salary of £69,820‑£74,000, a figure critics say is far below what top engineers command in the private sector. Commentators argue that the low pay and reliance on external consultants undermine the UK’s ability to implement its own AI strategy effectively.
