UK launches air quality alert service for local pollution

The UK government has launched a free, opt-in air quality alert service to warn citizens when pollution levels are high or expected to rise in specific locations. Users can sign up to receive notifications via SMS or email for chosen areas, such as their homes, workplaces, or local parks.

The monitoring system tracks five key pollutants: particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and sulphur dioxide (SO2). The initiative aims to help vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, take practical steps to reduce exposure.

Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle stated the service provides clear, reliable information to help people protect their health. Chief Medical Officer Sir Chris Whitty noted that air pollution is a solvable health problem that contributes to long-term conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and stroke, which currently cost the NHS millions of pounds annually.
