UK launches free 2026 Summer Reading Challenge for children

The Reading Agency is rolling out the free 2026 Summer Reading Challenge across the United Kingdom, beginning on July 4. The programme, the country's largest reading initiative for children, partners with Universal Music Group UK and adopts the theme “Read to the Beat,” linking stories with music. It offers free library events, celebrity readings and a nationwide creative competition that gives families a chance to win tickets to Bestival 2027. Research behind the challenge shows that two‑thirds of parents say their children feel bored during the summer holidays and many families struggle with the cost of activities.

In Surrey, the challenge is being delivered through the county’s 52 public libraries. Children can earn rewards by reading up to six books or completing six self‑chosen goals, with events including live musical performances, a “Musical Story Hunt,” and other creative workshops. More than 10,400 Surrey children took part in the 2025 challenge, and the 2026 rollout continues to promote reading as a tool for confidence, wellbeing and future opportunities.
