UK launches major resurfacing trial on M48 Severn Bridge

National Highways began a trial resurfacing of a 200‑metre section of the westbound carriageway on the M48 Severn Bridge on 1 August. The project uses a thin, machine‑laid surface instead of the traditional hand‑laid method, aiming to cut future maintenance disruption.

The trial involves overnight closures, lane restrictions and a contraflow arrangement on the eastbound carriageway from 8 August to 18 September, with a 30 mph speed limit and average‑speed cameras in force. Drivers are diverted via the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge while access to Chepstow remains. Programme runs until 27 September; if successful, full resurfacing of both carriageways is planned for 2027‑2028. Programme manager Chris Pope said the work is needed to keep the bridge safe and reliable for future generations.
