UK launches national taskforce to tackle misogyny

The British government has launched a national taskforce to combat misogyny across society, aiming to address harmful attitudes in workplaces, online, and within communities. The initiative is part of the Labour Party’s 2024 manifesto pledge to halve violence against women and girls (VAWG) within a decade.

Women and Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson stated that the taskforce seeks to ensure women do not have to limit their ambitions or safety due to fear. The group will include representatives from academia, local leadership, and women’s organizations, such as Girlguiding CEO Felicity Oswald, West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin, and Janaya Walker of the End Violence Against Women Coalition.

The taskforce’s first meeting is scheduled to take place after the conference recess, with an initial focus on the experiences of young people. This follows reports from Girlguiding regarding rising levels of sexism and misogyny faced by girls in schools, public spaces, and online.
