UK launches Semiconductor Catapult for AI and defence

The United Kingdom has launched the Semiconductor Catapult, an expansion of the former Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult. The initiative aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and accelerate the development of semiconductor technologies from concept to commercial deployment.

Supported by the government's £1.1bn AI Hardware Plan, the Catapult will focus on strategically important sectors, including AI hardware and defence. The organization provides startups, SMEs, and large corporations with access to specialist engineering expertise, laboratories, and equipment to reduce technical risks.

The Catapult operates through facilities in Newport, Bristol, and Glasgow. Its technical focus spans four primary areas: advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration, power electronics and thermal management, photonics and optical interconnects, and RF and mixed-signal integration.

The rollout will occur in two phases. The initial phase focuses on establishing integration-ready capabilities and core silicon to allow for architecture validation. The second phase will move toward system-level integration and pathways for scale-up and small-volume production.
