A major component of the visit involves a new defense initiative. The UK government has authorized the defense firm MBDA to share classified information regarding British components used in SCALP long-range cruise missiles. This decision is intended to facilitate the establishment of local assembly lines within Ukraine, allowing for domestic production in collaboration with France.

In addition to meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Burnham will co-chair a meeting of the ‘Coalition of the Willing,’ a group of nations providing support to Ukraine. This meeting is expected to take place in a hybrid format, involving both in-person and remote participants. The visit comes amid heightened tensions, following warnings from Moscow regarding the consequences of continued Western military involvement and drone support for Ukrainian forces.
