UK legal disputes involve estate compensation and fraud claims
Two separate legal cases in the United Kingdom have concluded with significant financial rulings involving claims of compensation and fraud.
In Bristol, 71-year-old Bern Rogers was awarded £127,500 following a six-and-a-half-year dispute with her siblings. Ms Rogers had been accused of theft and fraud after withdrawing funds from the estate of her late mother, Sheila Wills. Ms Rogers maintained that her mother had agreed to pay her for the 24-hour care she provided for two and a half years before her death in 2020. While the money was initially seized, the court ultimately awarded the payment to Ms Rogers.
In Essex, a High Court judge ruled against 68-year-old Karen Imber in a fraud case brought by Thames Water. Ms Imber had previously settled a claim for £225,000, alleging that sewage flooding had rendered her home in Woodford Green “unsaleable.” However, evidence revealed the property had been sold for £780,000 shortly before the settlement. The judge ordered Ms Imber to repay the compensation, noting that her actions constituted “fraudulent misrepresentation.”
