UK legal service exports reach nearly £11 billion
Exports of UK legal services reached nearly £11 billion in 2025, marking a growth of more than 60% over the last five years. According to an International Data Insights report by the Law Society, the European Union and the United States account for approximately two-thirds of this export revenue.
English law continues to underpin significant global commercial activity. In 2025, it governed £250 trillion of outstanding global derivatives and half of international seaborne trade, valued at £13 trillion. It also governs 40% of international business and financial transactions across various industries, 28% of global agricultural trade, and between £73 billion and £83 billion of the insurance market.
London maintains its status as a primary international legal hub. The London Commercial Court (LCC) delivered nearly twice as many judgments as its closest competitor, Dubai, and more than twice as many as New York. Additionally, the London Maritime Arbitrators Association reported a 16% increase in caseload for 2025, totaling 2,015 new cases.
