UK leisure centres receive major upgrade funding

Dawlish Leisure Centre in Devon has been approved for a refurbishment costing up to £5 million. The plan expands the gym, adds two exercise studios, upgrades changing rooms, improves ventilation and air quality, refurbishes the solar system and extends the car park. Funding includes up to £3 million from the Community Infrastructure Levy and about £1.2 million from internal borrowing, with an additional £1 million earmarked for maintenance. Councilors praised the project as long‑awaited, noting the centre’s aging facilities and delayed start caused by the Covid pandemic.

In Edinburgh, the City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh Leisure will move forward with the refurbishment of Portobello Swim Centre after a public consultation showed 91 % support for investment. The next design phase will focus on upgraded changing facilities, improved accessibility, and preserving the building’s heritage character. Plans include finalising designs, obtaining consents, appointing contractors and setting a timeline, while addressing concerns about temporary closure by providing alternative facilities and support for swim lessons.
