UK Libraries Launch 'Read to the Beat' Summer Reading Challenge for Kids

Local councils across the United Kingdom have rolled out the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, themed “Read to the Beat,” inviting children aged 4 to 11 to combine reading with music‑based activities. Participants can sign up online or in‑person at their nearest library and earn stickers, character cards and, after reading six books, a certificate and medal.

The programme includes a series of free events such as karaoke sessions, a “magical tea” workshop, engineering‑focused STEM activities, music‑making clubs and board‑game afternoons. Each activity awards a sticker toward the challenge. The initiative is delivered in partnership with the Reading Agency and Music Group UK, with support from volunteers and staff at libraries such as Cheshire East Council’s branches and Corstorphine Library in Scotland. The challenge runs through the summer holidays until 12 September 2026.
