UK local councils announce major road maintenance and repair programmes

Local authorities in the United Kingdom are implementing significant road maintenance programmes to address infrastructure damage.

In Reading, the Borough Council has announced a five-week resurfacing programme starting 17 August. The initiative covers 17 sections of main roads, including Friar Street, Bath Road, Henley Road, and George Street. The project is supported by a £2.9m government grant and £1.1m in council investment. This follows a multi-year investment strategy that has reportedly increased the proportion of roads in good condition from 35% to 79%.

In Shropshire, the Council has extended its highways maintenance contract with Multevo until 31 March 2027. The extension aims to address an increased volume of safety-critical repairs caused by severe winter weather and summer heatwaves. Shropshire Council reports repairing an average of 780 potholes per week, with over 22,000 repairs completed since the start of 2026.
