UK local councils face budget gaps due to rising social care costs

Local authorities in the United Kingdom are facing significant budget pressures driven by rising demands in social care and essential services.

BCP Council is projecting a £27 million overspend this year due to increasing costs in adult and children’s social care. Councillor Mike Cox stated that if these costs continue to rise at the current rate, the council may be forced to request emergency financial support from the central government to avoid a Section 114 notice. Cox attributed the crisis to insufficient national funding for children’s and adult social services.

Similarly, Barking and Dagenham London Borough Council anticipates a £28 million funding gap for the next financial year, with day-to-day costs projected at £331 million against £303 million in total funding. Despite an estimated 11.5% increase in grants following a government shakeup, Councillor Rocky Gill noted that the boost falls short of addressing intensifying demands in adult social care, children’s social care, temporary accommodation, and special educational needs services.
