UK local councils implement service cuts and social care changes

Local authorities in the United Kingdom are implementing significant financial changes to address budget shortfalls. In Warrington, the Borough Council has proposed £51 million in savings, targeting reductions in libraries, community centres, and green spaces. Residents have expressed frustration, citing concerns over mismanagement and the potential decline of town maintenance and community pride.

In East London, Hackney Council has removed a £250 weekly cap on social care charges for home care. While the council estimates that 60 per cent of recipients will remain unaffected, some residents may see their care costs increase by up to 25 per cent. Officials stated the move aligns the borough with statutory minimums set by the UK Government and aims to ensure the system is fully funded without borrowing.
