UK local councils implement solar projects to reduce energy costs

Local councils in the United Kingdom are implementing solar energy projects to reduce electricity costs and carbon emissions.

In Kent, Swale Borough Council installed over 200 solar panels on the roof of Swale House. The project, completed by Push Power Ltd, resulted in a 55% reduction in energy bills between March and June 2026, saving the council £7,262. The system also generates income by exporting excess electricity back to the national grid, having already sold 13,850 kWh. The installation has prevented 13,000 kg of CO2 emissions.

In South Hams, the Quayside Leisure Centre in Kingsbridge has installed 310 solar panels as part of a wider decarbonisation programme. The system is expected to generate approximately 186 megawatt hours of clean electricity annually, covering about half of the centre’s yearly electricity use. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of rising energy prices and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 36.1 tonnes per year.
