UK local councils seek government review and debt relief

Local authorities in England are seeking government intervention regarding the consequences of local government reorganisation. In Lancashire, the government has confirmed a timetable for its review of recent reorganisation decisions, which is expected to continue into early 2027. This follows a July decision to replace 15 existing councils with four larger unitary councils by April 2028.

Separately, West Northamptonshire Council has formally requested that the Secretary of State write off substantial legacy debts inherited during its 2021 reorganisation. The council is calling for parity with authorities in Surrey that recently received government debt relief. West Northamptonshire Council leadership argues that residents should not bear the financial burden of historic liabilities from previous council structures.
