UK man adopts strict diet to combat stage 4 esophageal cancer

Dale Atkinson, a 35-year-old gym owner from Reading, UK, is fighting stage 4 esophageal cancer after being told he had only months to live. Following a diagnosis in October 2024 that showed the cancer had spread to multiple lymph nodes, Atkinson has implemented significant lifestyle changes alongside medical treatments.

In addition to undergoing targeted chemotherapy and immunotherapy using pembrolizumab supported by intensive genetic testing, Atkinson has completely overhauled his diet. He has transitioned to a menu consisting primarily of whole, organic, and vegetarian foods, specifically eliminating all refined sugar and processed foods. He believes reducing refined sugar may create an environment less conducive to cancer cell growth.

While Cancer Research UK notes that good nutrition can help the body maintain health and support recovery during treatment, Macmillan Cancer Support cautions that diet alone cannot cure cancer. However, a balanced diet may improve a patient's ability to tolerate intensive medical treatments.
