UK markets face volatility as FTSE 100 falls and fuel prices surge

The UK stock market experienced significant volatility this week, with the FTSE 100 blue-chip index falling 2.2% following a sharp sell-off driven by turmoil in global bond markets. The FTSE 250 also ended the week marginally lower, finishing at 24,194.24.

Economic pressures are mounting across several sectors. UK fixed mortgage rates have reached their highest levels in over two years due to elevated government bond yields. Additionally, diesel prices in the UK exceeded £2 per litre for the first time on Friday. This surge in fuel costs comes as European governments consider releasing emergency fuel reserves to address record prices and security concerns.

In other news, a proposal to fund the BBC through a monthly £11 levy on home internet connections is gaining momentum as ministers evaluate financing options for 2028.
