UK maternity units in Stroud and Torbay see closures and upgrades

The Stroud Maternity Unit in Gloucestershire has had its six post‑natal beds closed since 2022, limiting mothers to a 6‑12 hour stay before discharge and pausing home births across the county. A Care Quality Commission inspection in April 2024 highlighted shortcomings in care quality and leadership, prompting calls from local campaigners and MP Simon Opher to restore the beds. The NHS Foundation Trust in Gloucestershire said it has strengthened medication processes and data collection in response to the report.

Meanwhile, Torbay Hospital in South Devon opened a newly refurbished birthing suite called "The Cove". The suite features a birthing pool, a fully renovated birth room and, for the first time, an accessible wet room designed for women with disabilities. The project, part of broader improvements by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, aims to provide greater choice and a calm environment for families during labour and birth.
