UK mega-dairies face scrutiny over environmental impact

A new report by The Wildlife Trusts, titled ‘Doing Dairy Differently’, warns that the rise of over 40 ‘mega-dairies’ in the UK is placing significant pressure on land, water, and natural ecosystems. The report highlights that large-scale dairy and beef farms currently lack the same government monitoring requirements applied to intensive pig and poultry units.

Data analysis from the Environment Agency indicates that dairy activity was responsible for 71% of serious agricultural pollution incidents in England. These incidents have contributed to river damage, algal blooms, and reduced oxygen levels. The report also notes that the number of farms keeping cattle indoors year-round has more than doubled in the last decade, leading to increased volumes of slurry that exceed current storage and management infrastructure.

To address these issues, The Wildlife Trusts recommends stronger regulation for high-risk systems, including environmental permitting for large housed units. The report suggests that transitioning to lower-input, nature-friendly systems—utilizing well-managed grazing and healthy soils—could reduce environmental pressure and reliance on artificial fertilizers while maintaining profitability.
