UK menopause support research and upcoming employer legislation
New research from the University of Sunderland highlights the specific challenges faced by women with learning disabilities during menopause. The study, conducted in collaboration with NHS South Yorkshire and NHS North East and North Cumbria, found that menopausal symptoms are often difficult to identify in this group because they can mimic symptoms related to their disabilities. This can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. The findings emphasize the need for better communication between healthcare staff and patients, as well as the importance of community support and education for both women and their carers.
In a separate development, wellbeing experts are noting a lack of awareness among employers regarding the UK’s Employment Rights Act 2025. Under this legislation, employers with more than 250 employees will eventually be required to publish Menopause Action Plans alongside their gender pay gap reporting. While currently in a voluntary phase, these plans are expected to become mandatory by Spring 2027. Recommended actions for employers include training managers, offering occupational health advice, establishing support networks, and conducting workplace risk assessments.
