UK approves Eli Lilly's Foundayo oral weight-loss pill

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved Eli Lilly’s Foundayo (orforglipron), making the United Kingdom the first European nation to authorize an oral GLP-1 receptor agonist for both weight management and type 2 diabetes treatment.

Foundayo is a once-daily pill that can be taken without food or water restrictions, offering a convenient alternative to the injectable GLP-1 treatments that currently dominate the market. The medication is authorized for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or those with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have at least one weight-related health condition. It is also indicated to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

While the MHRA has granted regulatory approval, the drug is not yet available through the National Health Service (NHS). Access via the public health system depends on a pending assessment by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Initially, the medication is expected to be available through private prescriptions. Eli Lilly has indicated that the pill's list price in the UK is expected to be lower than its injectable counterpart, Mounjaro.
