Radiet Meles convicted of rape after avoiding UK deportation

Radiet Meles, an Eritrean national who entered the United Kingdom illegally in 2015, has been found guilty of rape and assault by beating at Cardiff Crown Court. The conviction follows an attack on a woman in Newport, South Wales, in March 2026.

Meles had previously been convicted of attempted rape in 2019 after an incident involving an unconscious woman at a house party. At the time of his initial sentencing, the judge noted that Meles would likely face a deportation order and immigration detention upon his release. However, Meles was not deported and remained in the country, eventually returning to Newport after serving his five-year sentence.

The defendant, a former soldier, had worked at various locations including a food-packaging factory and Amazon. He is expected to face a lengthy custodial term following his sentencing, which is scheduled for November 20.
